Our mortgage agent of the week is Darren Ward, coming to us from a corner office 700km away in Calgary. Over 80% of Darren’s business is still being done here in Grande Prairie and the surrounding areas.

Darren was born in Grande Prairie and raised in La Glace so he’s ready to answer your local questions!

Q – Can I switch from my current mortgage lender and when is a good time to do this?

Darren – Great question, you can switch from your current lender and the best time to do this is at your mortgage renewal date. If you have a standard mortgage (no HELOC attached) you can switch and the new lender will cover the costs, plus you get yourself the best possible rate out there. Even if you do have a HELOC, there will be a processing fee involved but this can still be done.

Are you wondering if a switch is good for you? With 47% of all mortgages in Canada coming up for renewal in 2018, this may be a good time for you to check!

Darren Ward’s Electronic Business Card

I’ve been with Dominion Lending now for over 2 years and I’ve really enjoyed all my experiences to date.  Even though I work in a corner office 700km away in Calgary, over 80% of my business is still being done in Grande Prairie and the surrounding area.

I was born in Grande Prairie and raised in La Glace and attended school through to high school which I attended in Sexsmith.  I have a lot of friends and family that still live here and lots that work as realtors, lawyers and insurance brokers so it’s nice to work with them basically on a day-to-day basis.

What’s something that most people don’t know about me?  I took Spanish and Japanese courses in University and my goal leaving school was to be an interpreter.  I took a job in Tokyo in 2005 teaching English and I hoped it would be my springboard into my career as an interpreter.  The overall experience was amazing but I came to understand that North America is where I wanted to live and that I missed way too many things I had originally taken for granted.

Another thing most people probably don’t know, I’ve been golfing for over 25 years and I’ve had the same set of clubs for the last 20 years.  This may not be a big deal to a lot of people but for people that golf a lot (30+ rounds/yr), that’s unheard of.  If they had not been top of the line clubs in 1997 this probably wouldn’t have been the case but it says a lot about the quality of the clubs when they’ve held up this long.  Ha Ha

So whether you’re looking for tips on how to speak Japanese, want to play a round of golf or actually need some mortgage advice, you’re talking to the right guy!
